Introduction
John P. Lenhart D.C., M.D. is a board certified specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. His sub specialty is Orthopaedic Medicine. Dr Lenhart came up with the concept of dancing for health after observing very healthy elderly ballroom and swing dancers. He notices that those people acted much younger than their chronological years. They were mentally sharp and engaged in life. They were truly living; socially engaged and happy.
Dr. Lenhart had written a previous book called “7 Secrets of Anti-Aging”. In that book he greatly researched the seven key elements needed to stay young and healthy. He also lectured at national medical conferences on physical activity in anti-aging. In dancing, he noticed that what he discussed in his first book was being done as a byproduct of the dance process.
Physical activity and mental stimulation are the most important Secrets of anti-aging. When people dance they inadvertently do both things. They are aerobically active by doing cardiovascular exercises by the movements in dance, and at the same time they are improving their reflexes and balance. They exercise their mind by having to remember the dance moves and count to the rhythm of the music in order to transition from one stem pattern to another. What they are doing is exercising their mind to stay sharp.
Because Dr. Lenhart had extensive training in rehabilitation, he was able to put the pieces of the puzzle together and explain in simple every day terms how dancing will not only prolong someone’s life but it will greatly enhance their enjoyment of life.
With the popularity of “Dancing With The Stars” TV program. This book has arrived at a time when the greatest impact in health enhancement is possible. The baby boomers need an activity that is fun to do, social, romantic, and at the same time will greatly enhance their quality of life.
